Clark Cottage School

I am a homeschooling mom. I have one child, a beautiful little girl who is currently in second grade named Danger Girl. Danger Girl loves to observe nature. At any given time she will have a collection of miscellaneous insects secured to observe. She also has a collection of rocks she has deemed interesting, and just recently added a bird’s nest to her nature collection.

In our homeschool we use a Charlotte Mason/ Classical approach to teaching. If you have never read the Charlotte Mason series, I recommend it to homeschoolers and non-homeschoolers alike.

Why I homeschool? There are plenty of reasons that parents decide to teach their own children. My reasons are simple ones:

1) I believe that an understanding of God is the most important thing a child can learn. Teaching my own child means I get to make sure she has God as her foundation to everything else.

2) Going along with #1, I am far too lazy not to homeschool. Sending my child to a public school everyday means that when she got home I would have to review what she is learning, and discuss with her the things that contradicted God. If I homeschool, I know what she is being taught and don’t have to worry about this.

3) I believe the education of my child is my responsibility. I don’t want to throw off my responsibilities on a person I don’t even really know.

There are of course many other reasons mixed into all of this, but these are my main motivators.

I am by no means an expert at homeschooling, but I like to share great resources I come across (particularly if they are free). I also will share my journey, in the hopes that as I learn, I can help others on their path.

Our Homeschool Materials:

Math: We use a combination of Math Mammoth and Math on the Level. I will also include some “living” math books this year

Science: as do many who use the Charlotte Mason approach, we use the Handbook of Nature Study by Ann Botsford Comstock. We also use 106 Days of Creation Studies, which can be purchased at Simply Charlotte Mason. “Living” science books will be included in our science curriculum, including the Burgess Bird Book.

Foreign Language: For our language study, we are currently learning Latin using Prima Latina. We will also be adding Song School Greek to our foreign language curriculum.

Phonics/Reading: We use Happy Phonics supplemented with Explode the Code. For 2nd grade we will continue with these resources some, but our main focus will be on just reading whatever we can get our hands on.

History/Geography: For this we also use a Simply Charlotte Mason resource, Joshua through Malachi and Ancient Greece. We will also be using A Child’s Geography Volume II.

Handwriting: This is something that needs some work, so we will be using Delightful Handwriting from Simply Charlotte Mason. You can see my review of Delightful Handwriting here.

Of course this is not an exhaustive list of our homeschool materials or subjects, but it gives you an idea if you are interested in checking out any of these materials.

I had to chuckle at #2! So true! We’re done at the end of the day, and that’s it! 🙂 Stopping by from HHM. I’d love to see you link this up to #BTSbash at my blog!
