HMJ- Week of Preparation

16 Nov

  • In my life this week…

This week has been a hard one for us. I am having to distance my child from friends of hers because of some issues that have come up with that family. Now I just have to figure out a way to explain the situation to an 8-year-old.

On a happier note, I have been getting organized for Thanksgiving next week. Danger Girl and I have our menu planned out, we have most of the shopping done, and we have a plan for cleaning and cooking next week. She is very excited to help me prepare this year.

  • In our homeschool this week…

This week we have done activities that focus on Thanksgiving. We read “An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving” by Louisa May Alcott, we have read about the origins of the holiday, and we have done lots of Thanksgiving related crafts.

Danger Girl has also started reading about fish. She wants to learn more about fish so she can determine what kinds to put in her aquarium. I think we may do a unit study on this topic soon. She has also expressed an interest in learning about pugs and computers.

  • I am inspired by…

I have come across so many interesting Thanksgiving and Christmas printables and activities lately. There are so many creative homeschool parents with a presence on the internet, and I am inspired by their creativity.

(Check out freehomeschooldeals.com for some of these great activities)

  • Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We actually don’t have any travel plans, but we will have family coming to our house next week. My husband’s family will join us, and I always look forward to seeing them. My husband has a really great family.

  • My favorite thing this week was…

This week was just Danger Girl and I for the most part, and it was nice to spend one-on-one time with her. She really seemed to enjoy the time as well. She even cuddled up on the couch with me to read one day, which is something she hasn’t done in a while.

  • What’s working/not working for us…

I have to make some decisions about Chatterbox. I am not sure it is working to have her here, and I have to decide if I need to change that. She can get too disruptive, she destroys Danger Girl’s toys, and she will lie about almost anything. I am not sure if it is a good idea to continue allowing this influence around my daughter.

  • Things I’m working on…

I have started my Christmas shopping lists. I am a chronic list maker, so I am making a list of everyone we plan to give presents to, then I will determine how much we are willing to spend before I decide what to give everyone. There is a prt of me that hates doing this before Thanksgiving is over, but I know it is necessary.

  • I’m reading…

I am still reading “Wisdom Meets Passion”. It is a good book, but it has been hard to find time to read recently.

  • I’m cooking…

I will be cooking lemon chess pies this weekend for my husband to take to work. Next week I will be making the traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

  • I’m grateful for…

My mother-in-law has offered to make the pecan pie for next week. I will eventually have to make one myself, but I will not argue with her for now.

On a more serious note, I am grateful for the chance to see family.

  • I’m praying for…

I am praying for guidance on whether or nor Chatterbox should continue joining us for school.

HMJ- Our Adventures in Illness

9 Nov

  • In my life this week…

This week we have all been sick. I started with allergies and ended up with an upper respiratory infection. Danger Girl has been trying to pretend she’s not sick, but when that child can get still and quiet most of the day, you know something is wrong.

An interesting, and quite frankly sad, thing happened this week. This one little boy who is friends with my daughter asked me who won the election. When I told him Barack Obama would once again be president, he was very excited. Since I was a little surprised by such a strong reaction from someone so young, I asked him why he was so excited. Apparently he had heard on the news that if Mitt Romney became president black people would become slaves again.

The sadness factor comes from the fact that he heard this on the news. Then again, I can’t say I’m terribly surprised by that fact.

Other than that, we laid around the house a lot, trying to recuperate.

  • In our homeschool this week…

We really only had one school day this week. Danger Girl spent some time doing her own study about fish. She has an aquarium, and she is trying to determine which fish will be able to live together. I love seeing her getting excited about this.

We did do something that Danger Girl found very fun. She drew her own pictures of a couple of stories I read to her. She liked the chance to draw, and it was another little step towards notebooking that I have been working on.

  • Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

I can’t say if it’s advice or not yet, but I am trying a new experiment this year. Rather than going on with our normal schedule during the holiday season, we will do a relaxed schedule. We will pursue the girl’s interests, and not worry about our normal work. I will have to see if this allows less frustration during the holiday time.

  • I am inspired by…

I have recently been reading about Jimmie’s struggles on Jimmie’s Collage. I am inspired by her strength through her daughter’s situation. I find things hard sometimes with a perfectly healthy child. I can’t imagine how hard this is for her, and she continues to do what she has to do through all of it.

  • Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

As long as I am better by then, we are going to see my step-daughter in a play this weekend. She is very excited because she was one of the few freshman that were actually cast in the play.

  • My favorite thing this week was…

I was happy to learn I had been nominated for a blog award at HSBA Post. That was very exciting for me.

  • I’m reading…

“Wisdom Meets Passion” by Dan Miller and Jared Angaza.

  • I’m grateful for…

It is nice to have family that is willing to help out when I am unable to do my normal work. My husband has been very sweet this week, and I am very grateful for him.

The ADD Days of School

7 Nov

We have reached that point in the school year where everyone is aware that the holiday season is approaching and attention spans are growing shorter. Last year I pushed forward anyway with our regular schedule which resulted in lots of frustration.

This year I have a new plan. Instead of keeping with the regularly scheduled programming, I plan to try more of an unschooling approach. I will follow rabbit trails and let us take a break from formal schooling.

There is a part of me that feels stressed out about this, but I learned last year that the stress will be even worse if we don’t take the break. My plan is to let both girls make a list of things they are interested in doing for the rest of this year. We will pursue their interests (with some things I add in). This way school will still be happening but they will both have fun.

We will start this off with focusing on fun Thanksgiving related topics the week before Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving week we will do planning and preparing for the big day. After this we will take each week to pursue one of their activities until we get closer to Christmas when we will start doing Christmas related activities.

After Christmas we will take an official break from school until the new year. Then we will get back to our normal routine. This may mean that we have to do a little longer school year or that we don’t get everything done that I wanted to do, but I think the experiment is worth it.

I will let you know how this turns out for us. Be praying!

HMJ- Candy, Costumes and Time Off

2 Nov

  • In my life this week…

This week I got caught up on cleaning, particularly laundry. Since Danger Girl started doing her own laundry, I get behind sometimes because I have to remind her to move her stuff over. It is worth it to take the extra time though, so I won’t complain (too much).

I also got to deal with an annoying car insurance situation this week. I won’t bore anyone with the details, but we had a bad enough experience that we are now switching insurance companies.

We did Trunk or Treat Wednesday, and it was a lot of fun. My husband handed out candy and had a game for the kids. I helped out with getting addresses so we could send people their pictures, and had a table to generate interest in American Heritage Girls in our community. We had a great turnout, and I believe everyone had a good time.

I also got to spend some time with my husband this week, since he was off on Thursday. We got to make a trip to the bookstore. I got “Matilda” and “Five Little Peppers” to read with Danger Girl, and I got “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” for myself. My husband got some new Sci-Fi books. I love going to the used bookstore because you can walk out with a $200 amount of books for $50.

  • In our homeschool this week…

This week Danger Girl and I are doing a couple of science experiments. She loves doing experiments! In fact, at the bookstore I got “Science Experiments you Can Eat” for .25 and I think she was more excited about that book than any of the others.

We finished reading “Treasure Island” so we will find a new read-aloud book (I’m thinking of Burgess Bird Book).

We took Thursday off, so Danger Girl got to spend the day with her grandparents while my plans changed from working on lesson plans to dealing with insurance companies, but life happens right? Part of the day off was to give Danger Girl and Chatterbox a chance to have a break from each other. I love that my daughter has friends close by, but they spend so much time together they start fighting.

  • Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

This weekend we are going to see the last football game for one of Danger Girl’s friends. I have been telling him I would come see one of his games and things kept coming up, so I’m making sure to get to the last one.

Next weekend my step-daughter will be in her first play for the year, so we plan to go see that. She will have another play later in the year too. I don’t remember the name of the play we will see next weekend, but I know the other play is Little Shop of Horrors.

Sunday we have a Friends and Family day at Chruch, so I am hoping to see the people I have invited. We will also see my step-daughter’s last soccer game of the year.

  • My favorite thing this week was…

My favorite thing for the week was Trunk or Treat. We had a lot of fun, and other than the crazy person who brought a snake with him (shudder), it was a great evening.

  • What’s working/not working for us…

We have finally fallen into a rhythm for school, and that makes things a lot easier. Once Chatterbox joined us it took some time fixing our schedule, but now that we have that worked out things are running a lot more smoothly.

  • I’m reading…

I just started “Wisdom Meets Passion” by Dan Miller and Jared Angaza. I have read other Dan Miller books in the past, In fact “48 Days to the Work You Love” motivated me to quit my job and stay home. I am excited about reading this book.

  • I’m cooking…

I made chicken spaghetti this week. It had been a while since I had made some, and that is one of my favorite dishes.

I got my new Food Network Magazine, so I have plans to try some of the dishes from that. I found a couple things that look interesting.

  • I’m grateful for…

It was nice to spend the day with my husband Thursday. We don’t get many days like that.

  • I’m praying for…

I have a couple of friends who have had some illnesses lately, so I am praying for these people.

  • A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

Doesn’t she make a cute bumblebee?
